Formed in 1973 by an act No. XXX of 1973, Passed on october2, 1973. B.M.D.C. is the statutory body who adopted an ethical code for the registered medical practitioners of Bangladesh.

Composition of the council

 

 

 

 

       
....The council shall consist of the following members:
 

a.   The Director General of Health services, Government of Bangladesh.

b.  The Additional Director General of Health services, Government of Bangladesh.

c.   The Director of Drug Administration.

d.  The Director of Nursing service

e.  The Director General of Army Medical Service

f.    The Director General of Family Planning

g.  The Director, National Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine.

h. The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universities of Dhaka, Chittagong and Rajshahi

i.    12 members, at least two from each administrative Division of Bangladesh to be nominated by the Government

j.     One member each to be selected by the teaching staff of the Institute of the Postgraduate Medicine and Research, and each Medical college and Dental College of Bangladesh from amongst the teachers.

k.   One member to be nominated by the Bangladesh Medical Association

l.     One member to be nominated by the Bangladesh Private Medical Practitioners Association

m. One member, belonging to the legal profession, to be nominated by the chief Justice of the Supreme court of Bangladesh

n.  12 Members of Parliament, one from each of the 6 Divisions and one from each of the 6 Divisional cities, to be nominated by the speaker of National Assembly

o.  Two woman members to be nominated by the Government

 

The President, Vice President and Honorary Treasurer of the council shall be elected by the members from amongst themselves .
The president of the council shall hold office for a term not  exceeding three years and not extending beyond the expiry of this term as member.

 
     
Functions of BMDC
 

1.   BMDC recognizes the local medical and dental qualification by giving registration .

2.   B.M.D.C. is entrusted with the task of standardization of Medical education (curriculum).

3.   B.M.D.C. is empowered to enter into negotiation with the authority of abroad for the setting of a scheme of reciprocity for the recognition of local medical qualification.

4.    B.M.D.C.approve the foreign degrees .

5.   B.M.D.C. has the power to remove the names of registered medical practitioners permanently or for a specified period .

6.   B.M.D.C. is empowered to issue warning notice for professional infamous conduct .

7.   B.M.D.C.is entrusted with the postgraduate medical education.
